Get outside at least once a day
Going outside when it is freezing can feel daunting, especially when it takes ages to put on all your layers. But even a short 15- minute walk can boost your mood. Fresh air wakes up the body, and light movement helps combat winter sluggishness. Check out community member Esra’s recommendation for a winter hike.
Make intentional plans
Indoor activities
If you don’t love being outside, maybe plan a visit somewhere indoors, so you get out a little bit, without that being the goal! Winter is the perfect time of year to check out some museums, cafes, and other indoor activities. Try to plan something ahead so that you have something to look forward to in your calendar.

Plan something to look forward to
This could be a future trip, a workshop, a course, or even a spring garden project. Anticipation helps counteract the winter blues.
Allow your body to rest
It is normal to feel like resting more during winter. Our bodies naturally slow down at this time of year. Try not to push yourself too much and make space for rest. Winter can also be a great time to pick up a cozy indoor hobby like painting, knitting, or reading.
Did you know the library only cost EUR6 for the year and besides its huge collection of books, you can also get access to a digital catalogue of international magazines and papers?
Cook meals with plenty of nutrients
Cold weather often brings cravings for comfort food. Think about typical Christmas market treats like wurst (sausage) covered in sauce, fried mushrooms with melted cheese, or spiced drinks to stay warm. While delicious, eating these too often may leave you feeling sluggish.
Try to balance comfort foods with nutritious meals so your body gets the vitamins it needs to stay healthy throughout the season.
If you don’t know where to start, you could set yourself a challenge to cook a new dish with whatever seasonal vegetables you find in the supermarket that you’ve never had before!
Take vitamin D
Many Belgians take vitamin D during the winter months, and you can easily find supplements at pharmacies or shops like Kruidvat. While vitamins are not a cure-all, many people in our community say they help boost motivation and energy. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure about the right dose for you.
Choose good lighting for your home
Invest in a light lamp
While it is not the same as natural sunlight, light therapy lamps can help mimic daylight and support your mood. If waking up in the dark is difficult, consider an alarm clock or light bulbs that gradually brighten your room with a sunrise effect. This can make mornings feel a little more manageable.
Choose low lighting for your home
In countries like Finland, homes often use warm, low lighting to create a cozy atmosphere. Soft lights or candles can make a big difference on dark evenings and help your living space feel more comfortable and inviting.
Feeling alone? Reach out to others
If you feel alone during the winter months, reach out. You are likely not the only one feeling this way, and connecting with others can make a big difference.
We recommend checking out the International House Leuven social events to meet new people and stay connected.
