The processing times are currently long. Don’t get caught by surprise.
About the current processing times
In Flanders, a single permit renewal has to be requested maximum 6 months and minimum 2 months before expiry. It’s a two-step process, first the Flemish administration has a say, afterwards it goes to the Federal level.
Be aware, the current processing time (mostly at the Federal level) is long: a complete renewal process takes about 4-5 months. Since this overlaps with the end of the year when people often travel to see family, and means your renewal may not be seamless, make sure to consider your travel dates carefully before booking your trips.
The system is binary: 0 or 1, you have a valid permit or you don’t. There are no fast-track options, no in-between solutions, and no options to make exceptions depending on your circumstances.
What do we recommend?
If you are planning stay in Belgium without a holiday abroad during this time, you needn’t worry, but travelers beware. Your best option is to be organized, and ensure you are back in Belgium with plenty of time before your expiry date. Because planes can get delayed, trains cancelled, or roads closed. Then, avoid booking any travel until you have your new card or book flexible tickets.
Shrug your shoulders and shake your head mildly in disbelief – acceptance is a true sign you are becoming a local. 😉
