Synopsis:
Lang returns to his native village on the edge of the Gobi Desert after a 10-year prison sentence. The place looks nothing like how he remembered it: most of the inhabitants have long since abandoned the village and stray dogs have taken over the area. Lang is given the task of ridding the town of these unwelcome guests. While he reluctantly takes on this task, a close friendship develops between him and one of the dogs.
Commentary:
What at first glance does not seem like an easy film, emerges as a cinematic experience that is both challenging and accessible. In a nuanced way, director Guan Hu (Ba bai) explores themes such as loneliness, masculinity and humility toward man, animal and environment. With plenty of room for (visual) humor and a deep respect for the power of image and sound, Guan Hu's Black Dog showcases all the beauty that cinema has to offer. Last year the film won the award for Best Film within the 'Un certain regard' category at the Cannes Film Festival, and also proved to be the absolute top favorite at the Ostend Film Festival.
