Mobility With Children in and Around Leuven

Traveling with kids in Belgium is made possible by a plethora of free and discounted travel options. Whether it's taking the bus, train, or renting a bike, there are plenty of convenient services that make transport a breeze for families. Here, we'll guide you through the options for mobility, including how to get a De Lijn card, travel by train, rent a children's bike, and borrow a buggy for your little ones.

Bus

All children under the age of 6 ride free on buses and trams. For children living in Leven, you can apply for a card online through this link. With this card children aged 6 to12 can enjoy unlimited bus and tram travel throughout Flanders. You can do the same via mijnlijn to view all active De Lijn cards linked to your name.

How to Get the De Lijn MOBIB Card

  • Receiving the Card – Upon registering with the link above, De Lijn will send a MOBIB card with a subscription by mail.
  • Already Have a MOBIB Card? – If you already own a De Lijn MOBIB-card, the subscription will be added to your card once you apply.
  • No Kids-ID Yet? – If your child does not already have a Kids-ID, De Lijn will then request a photo via email before they can process the application.
  • Processing Time – The registration process takes approximately 7 days.
  • Lost or Not Received Your Card? – If you haven’t received your card or lost it, contact the De Lijn helpdesk via this link

Train

In Belgium, children up to 12 years old can travel for free on the train when accompanied by a paying adult (up to 4 children per adult). If there is no supervision or there are more than 4 children per adult, a Kids ticket can be purchased.

The Kids Ticket allows children under 12 to travel with a 50% discount if they are traveling alone or if there are more than 4 children per adult. Starting from the 5th child, you will need to purchase a kids ticket This ticket is valid for all destinations in Belgium.

Renting Children’s Bike

With VELOKadee, the subscription will allow you to have your children use a high-quality children’s bike from Velo and City Leuven. This service is available for Leuven families with kids aged 2 to 12 years old. It is possible to replace a child’s bike if the one that is currently being used is outgrown. Additionally, you can get free maintenance for these bikes at VELO. The annual subscription costs €70, with a discounted rate of €14 available through UitPas.

Borrow a Buggy

Heading to the center of Leuven or the market with small children in tow? Or going for a walk? At a Buggypunt you do not have to rent one, you can pick up a buggy free of charge. The buggies can be used for kids aged 1.5-5 years.

This service is free of charge, and there’s no deposit to be paid. You can reserve a buggy, but it's not mandatory. If you need a stroller for a longer period, you can contact the city hall at 016 27 27 72 or via leuven.helpt@leuven.be.
