Finding a day- care center for sick child

The municipality of Leuven compiles a list of centers(link is external) that provide "thuisopvang ziek kind" (home care for sick children). Choosing between the given centers depends primarily on the location and the conditions set by each center. For more information about the conditions and how to make a request, keep on reading!

Zorg Leuven - Child care at home

Zorg Leuven(link is external) is a welfare association that provides high-quality physical and mental care for families, the elderly, and children.

Zorg Leuven also provides care for sick children, with certified childcare workers available to visit your home on workdays between 07:00h- 18:30h.

Cost of service

The cost of daycare services is determined based on your family’s income. To calculate the rate, you must first request or simulate your income rate through the Mijn Kind en Gezin(link is external). In addition to the daily care fees, a small travel allowance of €1.50 will be charged. Keep in mind that home care costs are tax deductible.

Conditions for using Zorg Leuven:

  • You must be a resident of Leuven or of one of the following sub-municipalities: Heverlee, Kessel-Lo, Wilsele, or Wijgmaal
  • The service is available for children between 0 and 12 years old
  • The service can be requested for a maximum of 10 hours per day and 8 days per month
  • A doctor's certificate is required

How to apply:

  • Requests can even be made for the same day or next day by calling 016/24 81 99
  • Reachable on weekdays from 7:00 to 18:30 and during evening hours from 20:00 to 21:00, Sunday to Thursday
  • There is no evening permanency in July and August
  • Cancellations or modifications must be made by the end of the previous day's evening permanency

Teleservice for ill children (non-profit Kinderrijk)

Besides offering regular daycare, teleservice Kinderrijk(link is external) provides home care service for sick children with disabilities.

Cost of service

The daily price is calculated based on the rates determined by the family income. In addition to that, there is an administration cost of 1.24 per day. The kilometer allowance is calculated € 0.4265 per km. For more questions you can contact: kinderrijk@telenet.be

Conditions for using Teleservice Kinderdrijk:

  • This service is for registered children at Kinderrijk (also open for siblings)
  • The distance between Kinderrijk and the home must be less than 30 km
  • The service can be requested for a maximum of 9 hours per day and 8 days per month in the same family (brothers and sisters included)
  • A doctor's certificate is required

How to apply:

  • Requests can be made from 7:00 to 18:30 by calling 016/23.15.64
  • No services at weekends and public holidays and during closing days the daycare center
  • Cancellations must be made before 18:15h the previous day by calling 016/23.15.64
  • In case of any cancellations which not mentioned, a lump sum of 50% of the daily price may be charged

Kido Club - Child care at home

Like other centers, Kido Club(link is external) operates under the supervision of Kind en Gezin and offers at-home child care services. A qualified daycare worker will visit your home on weekdays between 07:00h- 18:30h and can give the necessary medication and helps with meals.

Cost of service

The daily cost is €2.37 per hour, with a minimum charge of €9.49 per day (for 4 hours of care). In addition to the daily cost, travel expenses are €0.97 per day for Wijgmaal, and €0.51 per km for other municipalities within a 15 km radius.

Conditions for using Kidoclub:

  • The service is available for children ages 0 to 12 years old (including other sick children in the same family)
  • The service can be requested for a maximum of 10 hours per day
  • A doctor's certificate is required stating that at-home child-care is necessary and the illness is not highly contagious
  • On the first day, a family certificate is needed, including the national register number, family members, and the name of the “Groeipakket” (Growth package)

How to apply:

  • Requests can be made by calling 0478/78 09 94 from 8:00 to 09:00, and in the evenings from 20:00h to 21:00h (Monday to Thursday and Sunday evenings).
  • By late cancellations is an amount of €12.50 charged (on the day itself or after 21:00h the day before)

't Eekhoorntje – Childcare at home

  • The service is available from 7:00h to 18:30h
  • The service can be requested for a maximum of 9 hours per day
  • The distance between Nursery 't Eekhoorntje and the home must be less than 30 km
  • Requests can be made via e-mail info@eekhoorntje or phone 016/25 12 77 (between 8:00 and 18:00h)

KU Leuven- Childcare at home

The university offers at-home childcare services for its Academic (AP) and Administrative and Technical staff (ATP). Care is provided by specially trained childcare workers from daycare centers, available from 7:45h-18:00h.

Cost of service:

A yearly subscription fee of €50 is required, regardless of the number of children. The daily cost is €2.50 per hour, with a minimum charge of €10 per day (for 4 hours of care).

Conditions for using the university service:

  • The service is available for children ages 0 to 12
  • The service can be requested for up to 10 hours per day
  • Each child is eligible for a maximum of 3 working days of care per illness and up to 15 days per year
  • A doctor's certificate is required and must be provided to the caregiver on the first day of at-home childcare

How to apply:

  • After signing up through your department, requests can be made during opening hours via 016 33 08 62, or outside of them at 016 32 11 11
  • Cancellations before 15:00h incur no fee; after 15:00h, a €75 charge will apply

Mutuality

Christelijke Mutualiteit (CM), in cooperation with Ferm, offers daycare for sick children who need to rest at home while their parents work. A qualified daycare worker from Ferm will visit your home between 07:00h- 20:00h (from Monday to Saturday). Ferm is an organization that also provides maternity care, household assistance, childcare, and home care services.

You pay €5 per hour for the first 9 hours of daycare each day (or €1.75 per hour if you qualify for supplemented refunds(link is external)) Please note that home care costs are tax deductible.

Conditions:

  • The sick child must be a CM member
  • The service is available for children ages 0 to 12
  • For children with a disability or long-term illness, the service is available up to the age of 21
  • The service can be requested for 9 hours per day. Requests for longer care will affect the amount to pay.
  • The service can be requested for 4 to 11 hours per day
  • Care is limited to 5 working days per child per illness
  • A doctor's certificate is required and must be provided to the caregiver by the last day of at-home childcare, at the latest.

How to apply:

  • Requests can be made before 13:00 by calling 078 05 01 09 (for the following day). After 13:00 or requests on Saturday, at-home childcare service is available starting the second following working day
  • Cancellations must be made before 12:00h (noon) on the working day prior to the requested day.
  • Late cancellations made after 12:00h (noon) or on the scheduled childcare, you pay daycare will incur a charge for the requested hours
