A Taste of Greece in Leuven: The Story Behind ‘Griekse Deli’

Julio and Koula are the intercultural couple behind Griekse Deli. He is originally from Cuba, and she is from Greece, specifically Laconia in the south of the Peloponnese.

One thing is certain to them: Belgians have a strong love for Greek food – a love they are happy to share with the community.

Building a Taste of Home

Julio came to Leuven in 2001, where he worked in academia for almost two decades. During that time, he completed two master’s degrees and a PhD, followed by many years in university research at KU Leuven. Later, together with his wife Koula, whom he met at the university, he developed a vineyard in Greece. What began as a hobby gradually became more serious, eventually leading to their decision to open the store in 2018.

The business started as an online shop for the first three years before expanding into a physical location. The shop was not only a way to sell their own wines, but also a response to the strong demand for Greek products in Belgium. “We saw the commercial opportunity. Greece produces things that are not produced here – these olives and olive oils, the salts; there’s no way to produce salt of this quality here,” assures Julio.

Authentic Flavors and Ingredients

When asked what he values most about the Leuven community, Julio highlights Belgians’ appreciation of quality. “Customers are willing to pay slightly more for products if they recognize their value,” he explains, pointing to one of their pots of fleur de sel as an example. He also emphasizes the openness of the local community to international cuisines and cultures, which allows diverse food businesses to thrive. “That’s why there are restaurants from all over the world here, and if the restaurant is good, it generally does well.”

Through the shop, Julio and Koula introduce customers to distinctive, high-quality Greek flavors and ingredients, helping to broaden appreciation for Mediterranean food culture in Leuven.

Sharing Culture Through Food

Julio sees himself as belonging to three cultures: Cuban, Belgian, and Greek. When it comes to Greek culture, the aspect he most enjoys sharing is, of course, food. “We also prepare ready-to-eat food. For example, today we have pastitsio.”

From Cuban culture, beyond food, he highlights resilience and a distinctive way of approaching life. However, he occasionally cooks Cuban dishes for his family, and Cuban oven-roasted meat holds a particularly special place in his heart. As for Greek cuisine, his favorite dish is spanakopita, a savory pastry filled with spinach, feta cheese, eggs, and onions.
